Like many women in Europe, I was shocked by the US Supreme Court's decision to repeal
the right to abortion. Here it is codified in the Law so we don't have to worry but we do stand in solidarity with our American sisters. Even if abortion is not something you would have considered, it doesn't mean you should take away that choice from others. Choice is the bedrock of freedom. Take away choice, you take away freedom. No woman is ever happy to have an abortion, and in many cases, it is their only option. Women will die, not only because of botched abortions, but because their
pregnancy is a danger to their life, and, tragically, some will take their own lives because they cannot face the future. American women have a long fight on their hands to refuse to become second-class citizens who are not able to have agency over their body and their destiny, but we have seen in the last few years how strong and organized they can be. I wish them to find the strength and courage needed and send them much
love.
Â
Sometimes in our life, we end up back to square one and it is daunting. It might even
be tempting to refuse what is, yet the only path forward is to take stock of the desolated landscape we find ourselves in and accept it. Once we acknowledge it, we are ready to see what needs to be done. It might look like a gigantic task but as with any goal, we must focus on the first step that we can work on that will produce results.
Â
As soon as we see results, our confidence strengthens and we can move to a second
phase, and so on. The key is to look at the situation with a painter's viewfinder — you know, that piece of card with a rectangle cut out in the middle — so that we can focus on just a small area.
Â
Whether we want to declutter our house, build a business, redecorate, fight social
injustice or lose some weight, we have to focus on one small area of the work and obliterate the rest of the work that needs to be done so that we don't get overwhelmed. We must move the imagined viewfinder around before we can choose that first step that will get us started and generate momentum. When losing weight, it might be swapping just one thing for a healthier option or just walking half an hour every day. When setting up a business, it might be defining it precisely. When fighting for a
cause, it might be joining a well-established movement and offering time, money or skills you have. When decluttering your house, it might be clearing and cleaning just a small space that you see all the time in your bedroom or living room.
Â
Set your first step and be proud of your small achievements. They will build on one
another. Trust me! If you forget about getting big results in a short time and choose to keep taking little steps with no deadline, you will see concrete results without feeling overwhelmed.
Â
On another note, I will be taking a long break this summer and I hope that you will have a good season. Remember to make your wellbeing your #1 priority always. Do what you love and love the things you have to do. You will remain in my thoughts.
