The idea of this challenge is to shift the energy in ourselves, in our life and in our home, so that we can truly experience a fresh start with the new year. If you play along each day, you will definitely start 2024 strong. Housework and decluttering always feel daunting. However, I always feel much better and lighter after doing even just a
bit of it. When we clean or clear our space, our energy shifts and our mindset becomes a lot more positive. Even just a few minutes can work wonders.
If there is one thing that makes Marie Kondo’s method so successful, it is that we are meant to sort one category of things at a time. For instance, if you are going to sort your shoes and you have shoes in the hallway, in the mud room
and in your bedroom closet, you bring out all your shoes into one place and sort them out. Throw away the ones you know you are not going to wear again or that are not in good order (think designated recycling bans), then put away the rest. Simple!
Today, I invite you to choose one category of things you are going to completely clear out to only keep the good stuff. If you haven’t
got much time, choose a small, specific category, such as scarves, underwear, coats, towels, pens, make-up, etc. Evaluate how much time you can allow for this exercise and go for it.
If you are away from home, you could choose to clear out emails. Avoid opening any email, just delete and make sure you keep registration/signup emails, courses, important correspondence. You
can still work in categories. For instance, you signed up for one particular newsletter but haven't opened it for a very long time which clearly shows that it isn't a good fit anymore. Open the last one you received and click on the unsubscribe button. Next, type the name of the sender in the search box, select all, scroll to check that there aren't any one you want to keep (if so, untick it) then click on Delete. One whole category gone. You might want to choose one from a company that emails
you several times a week. You can always subscribe again later on if you want to.
If you are clearing out clothes, don't try them on. If it’s not in good order, just toss it in a bag to take to the clothes recycling bank. If you know it doesn't fit or you don't like it any longer but it still looks fine, put it in a bag to give it away. If it has been waiting to be mended for a year
(or longer), let's face it, it's not going to happen, recycle it. Put back the good stuff you are keeping in the right place, that's it. I promise, it will feel so good to have completed this task today! Just do it, however small the category.
Don’t think too much and try not to let your emotions take hold. You are removing what you no longer need to hang on to.
If it doesn’t fit the idea of the person you want to be, it’s out.
Make space for the new and exciting!
